Self-Care Isn’t Optional

Self Care Isn’t Optional

Self care is cliche.

It feels luxurious. Even this picture looks luxurious. The old me used to see self care as hair salons, pedicures, massages and rest and I’d resentfully think, "Must be nice!!"

It's because self-care doesn't come easy. I assumed others had more time than me or (dare I say it) didn’t work as hard as me.

I saw it as a luxury that not everyone got to have.

It's not a luxury. You know how you promptly approach your emails and texts and immediately answer comments and messages? You know that urgency you put in getting the laundry done and dinner cooked and the kitchen sink absolutely MUST be cleaned or you won't be able to sleep?

What if we approached our mental, emotional and physical wellness with the same level of tenacity and conviction?

Can you imagine? "I absolutely won't check my emails until I get my 30 minutes of exercise. If I don't meditate I can't get to sleep. It's absolutely crucial I take a monthly social media detox. It's not even an option not to do it."

It's a mindset. A concept. A belief. A CHOICE.

Self care CAN be this important to you if you make it.

I'll let you in on a little secret based on my own experience.

You can totally ignore self-care and talk yourself out of it daily. Super doable. BUT eventually you'll fall apart. Might look different for all of us, but I mean like, to the ground, destroyed, wave the white flag kind of fall apart. It's not even an "if" this will happen, it's a "when."

You can take the power to figure this out while you're standing and have a choice or you can wait until you don't have one. You'll figure it out either way.

So, let's redefine how we view self care.

Self care isn't optional.

It’s also a discipline. Often, choosing the option that will best serve your mental, physical and emotional health isn’t always the easy or fun option. Already remember that it’s not easy and it’s also not an option.

Here are self care ideas:

Going to bed earlier

Watching less TV

Social media detox

Setting boundaries around relationships that don’t serve you

Waking up early to exercise

Meal planning

Hiring a nutritionist

Drinking enough water

Working on ditch and switch to remove toxins from your body and home

Reviewing finances weekly and creating a budget

Hiring a coach

Going to therapy

Taking vitamins

Cutting back on drinking

Reading personal development books

If this blog post resonated with you, you may love The Layered Growth Academy. It’s a one on one mentorship program for five full months. We dig deep into your mind, body and heart to find what it is you truly want and crave in your life. To establish boundaries, manage energy and create big life dream goals. You come out a different woman in the end. It’s personal development on steroids and if you’re ready, I’m ready.

Self care used to be so hard for me because I didn’t know how to manage my time and energy. I had zero boundaries and was depleting myself little by little until I completely fell apart.

There’s another way

Check out the details on the LGA page. I accept only two women a month.

The days are long, but the years are short. Make them count.
